We had an good turn-out for our drop-in session at Stampex. At least 35 people came to see us, many of whom knew little about stamp boxes; we hope we have engaged their interest.
We hope to repeat the event at next year’s spring Stampex (13-16 February 2019). So do put Saturday, 16 February 2019 in your diary and come to see us.

The September edition of Gibbons Stamp Monthly, just published, has an article about stamp boxes. It references this website and we are delighted to return the compliment by commending the article to our readers. It is a basic introduction to stamp boxes, very informative, and the layout is a delight to the eye.
Our photo shows one lot in the Barbara Kirk Auctions‘ sale on 14 August 2018. More then 30 lots include stamp boxes; many of the lots are single boxes, some are mixed lots of two or three. The catalogue is available here.
Why are we reporting on the Bleasdales auction to be held on 25 July 2018 titled “The Sewing Sale”?
It’s because Mauchline ware and Tartan ware feature heavily and at least 9 mixed lots include a stamp box. Our illustration is from Lot 117 which comprises 6 Tartan ware items. The catalogue may be viewed from here.
For just five and a half years – from the Autumn of 1985 until the Spring of 1991 – collectors of stamp boxes had their own, dedicated society. Based in the UK, it had a global reach, with members in mainland Europe and America.

Here’s something you may have missed: this fabulous Tiffany box was sold last December by Sotheby’s New York for $47,500 (against an estimate of $20,000 – $30,000). For more photographs, provenance, and lots of information on Tiffany, do see the catalogue on their website: Sotheby’s.
This amazing, silver gilt desk compendium incorporates a three-compartment stamp box. It once belonged to the last Maharaja of Rajpipla. The button in front of the stamp box rings a bell in the base of the compendium to summon your servant to post your correspondence.
What home can manage without one; and it is currently for sale on eBay at £2,500 (or Make Offer).

The silver in this combination of an ink well and four stamp boxes is hallmarked in London for Alfred Fuller, dated 1892. It is being offered on eBay as “Buy it now” at £2,450; item number 312030704777.
