Perhaps rather less well known (at least, in the UK) is that craftsmen began making practical things, such as walking sticks, for visitors from when Spa first became a resort. They soon diversified so that the town gained a reputation for its \u201cBois de Spa\u201d (Spa wood) objects. As with so many craft skills, production declined in the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century but we are left with a rich legacy of collectables. One of the best known publications is a book by Brian Beet which is a bilingual catalogue of the stamp boxes in the Mus\u00e9e de la Poste, Paris.<\/p>\n<p>Published in 1994, at the time of writing (October 2015), three used copies were being offered on <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff; text-decoration: underline;\">Amazon<\/span><\/a><\/span>. Based in the UK, it had a global reach, with members in mainland Europe and America.<\/p>\n<p>In that time, it produced 13 journals. Stamp boxes pop up at auctions all over the place but an auction devoted entirely to stamp boxes is a rarity these days.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/stampbox.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/PrimroseAuctionWeb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-106 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/stampbox.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/PrimroseAuctionWeb-215x300.jpg\" alt=\"PrimroseAuctionWeb\" width=\"200\" height=\"279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stampbox.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/PrimroseAuctionWeb-215x300.jpg 215w, https:\/\/stampbox.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/PrimroseAuctionWeb-733x1024.jpg 733w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>One of the most famous was the auction of the &#8220;Primrose&#8221; collection by <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidfeldman.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; text-decoration: underline;\">David Feldman<\/span> <\/a><\/span>at the millennium Stamp Show at Earls Court, London on 27 May 2000. This catalogue is a hard cover book full of illustrations of stamp boxes from the fairly ordinary to the quite spectacular.<\/p>\n<p>The auctioneer does sell some back catalogues on their website but this one does not appear to be available. However, at the time of writing (October 2015), two used copies were being offered on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><u>Amazon<\/u><\/span><\/a>. The title &#8220;Blue Eyes&#8221; comes from the star box in the sale, made by Faberge and once owned by Frank Sinatra.<\/p>\n<p>The auctioneer has kindly made a pdf copy of the catalogue available to this website. Two worth mentioning are <span id=\"productTitle\" class=\"a-size-large\"><em>Art Nouveau Domestic Metalwork: From Wurttembergische Metallwaren Fabrik, 1906,<\/em> a reproduction, with extensive additional notes, of the 1906 English catalogue\u00a0of the famous WMF company. This illustrates some (but not all) of the known WMF stamp boxes (ISBN 978-1851495108); and\u00a0<\/span><em><span id=\"productTitle\" class=\"a-size-large\">Swiss Carvings: The Art of the &#8216;Black Forest&#8217; <\/span><\/em><span id=\"productTitle\" class=\"a-size-large\">by <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jay Arenski\u00a0<span class=\"contribution\"><span class=\"a-color-secondary\">, <\/span> <\/span> <span class=\"author notFaded\" data-width=\"142\">Simon Daniels<span class=\"contribution\"><span class=\"a-color-secondary\">, <\/span> <\/span> <\/span> and <span class=\"author notFaded\" data-width=\"142\">Michael Daniels (ISBN 978-1851494934). This tells the story of the so-called &#8220;Black Forest&#8221; carvings which are now known to all originate in Switzerland. Ed. 2001) (ISDN 9780572025458) by Brian Austen. The bulk of this book deals with Tunbridge Ware chronologically and comprehensively. Given the vast range of Tunbridge Ware, stamp boxes are only a small proportion of the examples given &#8211; but they feature with illustrations. There are small sections on Killarney, Spa and Sorrento wares (stamp boxes certainly being known of\u00a0the last type ) and there are some notes on Mauchline Ware (another ware of which many stamp boxes can be found).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/stampbox.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/NeedlecasesBook.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-206\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-206 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/stampbox.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/NeedlecasesBook-252x300.jpg\" alt=\"NeedlecasesBook\" width=\"142\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stampbox.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/NeedlecasesBook-252x300.jpg 252w, https:\/\/stampbox.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/NeedlecasesBook-768x913.jpg 768w, https:\/\/stampbox.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/NeedlecasesBook-862x1024.jpg 862w, https:\/\/stampbox.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/NeedlecasesBook.jpg 1482w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 142px) 100vw, 142px\" \/><\/a>A book on <em>Victorian Brass Needlecases<\/em> may seem out of place here; but thereby hangs a tale. The book by Estelle Horowitz and Ruth Mann (1990; ISBN\u00a0978-0962585326) &#8220;does what it says on the tin&#8221; and deals with needle cases. However, quite a few of them may also serve as stamp boxes; some even being explicitly designed for dual or multiple uses. On page 25 the authors show a Patent titled: &#8220;Case to hold Postage Stamps, Needles, &amp;c.&#8221;.
